We are the Oak Arbor LEGObots!

Our team has chosen the name LEGObots. We are focusing on "bucket filling" activities throughout this season which are defined by sharing gracious professionalism and displaying good sportsmanship. The team divided into "mini teams" of programmers, builders and researchers.  All the individual efforts of these mini-teams comes together at the competition.  We are proud to represent our school!

LEGObots Tournament “Thanks!” and Report

The Oak Arbor LEGObot Team thanks everyone for supporting our team this year! As explained in our report below, we had a very successful competition on Saturday, Nov. 17. We shared our research, technical discoveries, teamwork abilities and our LEGO robot's ability to complete missions.

The initial scores for the robotic missions placed our team 10th among 23 other teams! We were thrilled since we, as 4th & 5th Grade Students, competed against students in several grades higher than ours! We won a "Creative Presentation" award for sharing our research in a creative way with a skit using Energy Super Heroes. It was an exciting season and a thrilling competition. While our season has ended, we're still learning from the experience.

Our special thanks to everyone for supporting us. We couldn't have done it without a sense of faith in our new endeavor.

With Appreciation,

The Oak Arbor LEGObots

Coaches Dale and Pam Steen

LEGObots' Competition Day

Our Oak Arbor team competed on November 17th at the Macomb Mathematics Science and Technology Center in Warren. The team was thrilled to have the support of their families and school friends who came to cheer too!

The Research team prepared an exciting and energetic skit.  They were a creative group using humor to share what they have learned about energy, it's use at the OPC and improvements that can be made. Inspired by the recent school play, Comic Book Artist, they have 8 stars of their show who are Energy Super Heros and their Director, Newsbroadcast Anchor, and the evil villian, Energy Waster.  It left the judges and guests well informed and laughing too.  Their success was highlighted in the team receiving the "Creative Presentation" award!

The Programming and Building Teams perfected the designs of "Putter" and "Driver," their affectionate names for their LEGO robots. They programmed and designed their robot to successfully complete 6 missions in less than 2.5 minutes.  As described by a parent, "the elegance of their robot design is it's simplicity."  It is amazing to see the success of the team's robot with a simple and efficient approach.  They stayed calm and focused during their rounds and were thrilled with their experience.   The team, along with supporters, were on their feet cheering the builder/programmer team at the robotics table.  After competing in three rounds, the team ranked 10th place with their robotic mission scores!  Incredible for students who had not ever worked with the LEGO NXT Mindstorm equipment/software and competed against Middle School Students alike!

The team was judged in four categories: Gracious Professionalism (a.k.a."Teamwork"), Research, Project Presentation, Robotic Missions, each weighted equally.  In three seperate interviews, they worked as a team answer judges questions in all of these areas. The team shared their experiences and expressed thier knowledge with the judges during a whirl wind day.  The LEGObots represented thier school well.

Approximately 23 teams competed in this event and 8 teams moved on to a State Competition on December 9th.  While the LEGObots did not pass to the next level of competition, they were successful in completing all the robotic missions they set out to complete, shared their research, explained thier programming and building methods and cheered each other on to a fantastic experience.

LEGObots present findings at the Older Persons Commission:

As part of this year's challenge, the LEGObots presented their findings to the O.P.C.'s Governing Board on Thursday, November 1, 2007. The research team had done an energy analysis of the OPC, interviewed building experts and had identified an alternative renewable energy source and energy conservation techniques.  The team confidently shared their findings with the Governing Board at the OPC.  The team answered questions about their recommendations and about their research method.  The Governing Board thanked the LEGObots commenting on the simplicity of some solutions and for sharing information about a new technology of Hybrid Solar Lighting.  Mr Brock, along with his Fifth and Sixth Grade students, Principal, Mr. Gladish, Elder and Steen family members were in attendance to support the team.   Great job LEGObots!

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

New this year!

This year two of our parents, Dale and Pam Steen, have taken on the challenge of organizing and coaching a team of Oak Arbor students in a national program geared to the elementary school  level. This Robotics team, using Lego products is an extra-curricular activity for students in grades 4 & 5. Regular meetings are held at the school, and the team will represent the Oak Arbor School in its competitions.

Our Challenge:

The 2007 First LEGO League Power Puzzle challenge is about understanding the elements of energy use in a world that uses more and more energy every day. As our world grows and changes, so do our energy needs. The Power Puzzle missions get FLL teams to consider some of the energy choices we have available and how those choices affect the world. With the Power Puzzle project, your team has the opportunity to look at many types of energy choices, analyze the possibilities, and work to improve energy use.

The community building the team has chosen is the Rochester Older Persons Commission building.  The research team has done an energy analysis, interviewed building experts and has identified an alternative renewable energy source and energy conservation technique.  The LEGObots presented their findings to the O.P.C.'s governing board on Thursday, November 1, 2007.

Fundraising:

We have been awarded a generous grant from the Midwestern Academy of the New Church in order to pay for the team registration, to purchase some equipment and get this new program started. In addition, our goal to raise $1,200 in "matching" funds for this year’s program has been met. The student involvement fee of $50 contributed toward this amount, and the remainder was raised through the following efforts:
1. Business Sponsorship – Approaching friendly businesses for financial sponsorship. A special Thank You to the following businesses:

Andrew J. Madak, D.O.

Center for Holistic Health and Natural Wellness

Curtis Insurance

Innatech

Sehi Computer Products, Inc.

Steen Photography

2. Family/Friends – Family and friends shared financial support of our childrens’ activity.
3. Pancake Breakfast – That was held on Sunday, September 30th, 9 – 10:15 AM where friends and family were welcomed to check out the Lego Robotics program, enjoy breakfast and even come to the Sunday Service afterward.

Our fundraising goal has been met for this competition year.  GO LEGObots!
